School of Management fc college publishes its first newspaper!

The School of Management, Forman Christian College published the first of its Forman Business Papers, ‘Thar Coal Mining Challenges’ by Dr Farid A Malik, on 13 December 2010.

The School of Management has organized a committee to help the business faculty with their publications. Faculty members present their “work-in-process” to their colleagues in seminars for suggestions and comments. Each paper presented in the seminar will be published as a working paper in a new School of Management publication called the Forman Business Papers.

“Every natural resource and mineral deposit is unique and so are its mining challenges. However, mining is our future for a well- established Pakistan,” said Dr Farid A Malik while presenting the first paper on “Thar Coal Mining Challenges” on 29 October 2010.

Dr Malik elaborated that the estimated coal deposit at Thar is about 175 billion tons and this, the world’s single largest deposit, is worth more than USD 20 trillion. It exceeds the oil worth of Iran and Iraq combined. He also said that the Thar field has its unique mining challenges as the coal seams, at places as thick as 25 meters, are covered with ground water above and below their surface. The ground itself is weak and underground gasification is not an option.

Dr Malik suggested that the way forward is excavation of a trial pit to physically extract the coal and to assess the success of the entire project. Development of the test pit will also lead to the preparation of bankable feasibilities which will then attract investors, expediting the entire process.

A copy of the first Forman Business Papers 2010/01 is now available at the Ewing Memorial Library, Forman Christian College.
